Himing Project
Residency in Himing Art Centre, Himi, Japan 2010
During my residency at the Himing Art Center in the small fishing town of Himi, Toyama Prefecture, I embarked on a project to create a mural that encapsulated the essence of the community. The art centre, housed in a renovated historical soy/miso production factory, served as the perfect setting for this endeavour. Using local plants and materials, I worked on the mural for over two months, gradually involving local art enthusiasts in the process.
The collaboration with locals, who were mostly unfamiliar with installation art was a rewarding experience, showcasing their genuine engagement and dedication. After my departure, the project continued to thrive with the participation of visitors, reflecting the inclusive nature of contemporary art creation. The resulting mural became a beloved fixture in the town for months, solidifying my belief in the universal potential for artistic expression and community involvement.
This transformative project in Himi not only shaped my artistic journey but also highlighted the power of communal creativity in unexpected places.
